The Great 8 of 2018: Make your New Year’s Resolution Count!

Ok, it’s that time again. The time when we build ourselves up, fill our minds and hearts with hope, in an effort to give our lives meaning, purpose, and a sense of fulfillment. It is time to dust off the treadmill, call long lost loved ones to reconnect, and get to work on that big idea that has been brewing in your mind.

 

What is it about the new year that gets people so motivated? I am an entrepreneur through and through, and I absolutely love seeing people break the mold and achieve their goals. But seeing so many commit to New Year’s resolutions leaves me on the fence. According to a Forbes.com post, “University of Scranton research suggests that just 8% of people achieve their New Year’s goals.” Are we setting ourselves up for failure?

 

The first thing people need to understand about setting a successful New Year’s Resolution is to realize that your decision to make a significant change in your life is not being attached to a special day, a place, or anything of the sort. You are making this decision based on a strategy, just like playing a good card game or a game of chess. It is easy to say, “I’m going to start….”, but unless you have a firm plan in place, you are not likely to experience the results to set out to achieve. Know in your gut that you want to experience this change more than anything. It has to be a burning desire, and you should be ready to make sacrifices.

 

 

Goals, aka New Year’s Resolutions, should have these basic criteria to achieve success:

  1.  Be specific!
    • Instead of “I’m going to lose weight”, say “I’m going to lose 15 pounds.”
    • Visualize what you look like having succeeded, and hold on to that image daily!
    • Account for every detail that is needed to achieve your goal.
  2. Write it down!
    • According to a research study by Dominican University of California psychology professor Dr. Gail Matthews concluded that people who wrote down their goals “were on average 33% more successful in accomplishing their stated goals than those who merely formulated goals”.
    • Use flashy paper, post it everywhere you will see it often, revise it often, be proud of it!
  3. Set a deadline!
    • Set a date of when you wish to achieve this goal, and HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE!
    • You are your own boss! Procrastination is the enemy! Don’t quit on yourself…get fired up!
  4. Go public!
    • Sometimes the shame of failure will hold you accountable to fulfilling your goal.
    • You may also find or ask a friend or family member that wants to jump on board.
    • Start a Facebook Group page, start a blog or website….make your goal #1 in your life!
  5. Plan ahead!
    • Try to look ahead at all the obstacles that may lay ahead and have a written plan to overcome those obstacles.
    • Consider all the places and people that may distract you from your goal and implement ways to avoid those situations.
    • Acknowledge your weaknesses.
  6. Embrace failure!
    • Don’t be so hard on yourself if you fail, be hard on yourself as you try!
    • Everyone makes mistakes, and they survive. Much can be learned from your failures.
  7. Live in the now, but move forward!
    • Know that long term goals can be achieved, but it is what we do day to day that is critical!
    • Wake up every day with your vision in mind. Take the small, significant, step.
  8. Find a mentor!
    • I don’t know anyone that can’t think of someone they look up to, someone they admire. I truly believe we draw our strengths from one another. I also firmly believe our primary purpose in life is to help one another. Find someone that touches your soul and allow their energy to awaken your inner strengths.
    • Surround yourself with positive influences. Put plainly, we all need encouragement. There is plenty of negative in the world. Seek out that individual or group that is on your side, that wants to see you win!
